Stage One: Often, the Story Exists Before the Script
Before anyone calls “action” on a short drama set, someone has already chosen which story is worth the risk. Often, tracing a few hits backward brings you to a book at the start of the pipeline. Breaking the Ice, ReelShort’s 2024 hockey romance centered on a secret child, comes from the novel Shutout by Jami Davenport. Bound by Honor, the mafia arranged-marriage series ReelShort premiered on November 1, 2025, is adapted from a novel by Cora Reilly. In Korea, https://reelshortwebsite.com/ the 2026 office romance Quiet in the Office!, which carries a 19+ age rating, is adapted from a web novel and webtoon. A number of app owners also run reading businesses, which keeps source material close at hand: Crazy Maple Studio builds the interactive-story app Chapters, Holywater operates the books app My Passion, and GoodShort’s Google Play developer name is GoodNovel. Without a book, writers lean on proven tropes such as revenge, billionaire romance, identity reveals and family drama. A script has one job: to condense a long drama story into scenes that each serve up a reveal, a reversal or a threat within seconds.
Stage Two: Casting Faces Viewers Know
It is in casting that the format’s economics show up on screen. When you scan the cast lists for short series on IMDb, the same names keep showing up. Noah Fearnley led ReelShort’s werewolf romance Fated to the Alpha in 2024 and returned in 2025 for Love on the Sidelines, a second-chance story about a former football star. On GoodShort, Rosa Singerman headlined both Blood and Bones of the Disowned Daughter and Kidnapped by the Mafia in 2025, the second opposite Franky Cammarata. A series has only a handful of free episodes to win you over, so a lead who arrives at the next title with a following from one app has a head start that matters a great deal. TheWrap reported in October 2024 that about 75 percent of ReelShort’s users were women, so producers are also casting with a specific viewer in mind. DramaBox has a production team in Los Angeles.
Stage Three: Filming Seventy Episodes in About Eight Days
Per TheWrap, a Western short drama is typically shot in eight to ten days and costs $150,000 to $300,000 per series. Wikipedia’s overview of the format paints a similar picture, putting a seven- to ten-day shoot at $150,000 to $250,000 for 50 to 70 or more episodes. Close to nine episodes’ worth of material every working day: that is what a 70-episode series shot in eight days requires, if you do the arithmetic. Chinese producers selling abroad have reported smaller numbers still, with Jiuzhou Culture putting a 70-episode series at $100,000 to $150,000 in China Daily reporting from January 2024. Each finished episode therefore costs roughly $1,400 to $2,100. Of the more than 600 titles it had made for overseas markets, Jiuzhou also reported, about 80 percent were dubbed Chinese adaptations and 20 percent were original overseas productions. Dubbing lets a studio recycle a finished domestic series, so the expensive shoot happens only once.
Stage Four: Cutting Episodes to 60–100 Seconds
In the edit suite, the footage is chopped into episodes of 60 to 100 seconds, framed vertically at 9:16 for a phone. With room for a turn or two of plot at that length, each episode is built around a question the next episode promises to answer. The mechanism that moves you from one installment to the next is the cliffhanger, and it serves as the house style. Put together, those slivers make a 70-episode series roughly 70 to 117 minutes of screen time. On GoodShort’s official pages, My Stolen Crown: I Am the Dragon Queen shows 30 episodes and The Dragon King’s Return shows 100 episodes; episode counts differ widely by title. Since ReelShort also maintains official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion, the same footage can reach viewers who never open the app. Put another way, editors are cutting video dramas for several screens at once.
Stage Five: Deciding Where the Paywall Falls
Last of all comes a creative decision that is also a commercial one. Free access covers the first eight to ten episodes in the standard model TheWrap lays out. In 2024 TheWrap counted the first eight episodes as free, whereas ReelShort’s own blog puts its free run at usually five to 15 episodes. Coins unlock the episodes that follow, and according to ReelShort’s blog the standard cost of an episode is about 60 coins. Watching ads also earns coins, and according to the same blog one ad unlocks two premium episodes; alternatively, you can buy a weekly VIP pass that costs about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 and renews automatically. Your store may show something different, as prices vary by country, platform and promotion. The contentious part is placement: paywalls dropping right on a cliffhanger are among the most common complaints about these apps, alongside auto-renewing weekly passes and rising coin costs. Coin generators and modded “unlimited coins” apps that promise a way around the wall are unofficial and better avoided.
Stage Six: Animated and AI-Generated Series
The camera is removed entirely in the latest production stage. ReelShort now carries animated motion comics that run alongside its live-action library. The Lost Heir is a 58-episode family saga about Arthur Lancaster: he loses his memory while saving his brother, grows up on a farm as “Johnny” and in the end exposes the foster sister who kept framing him. A 52-episode ReelShort title from 2026, Shattered Vows is an AI-generated animated motion comic with no cast listed; it centers on heiress Vanessa Windsor seeking revenge on the husband and best friend who helped her sister’s killer get away. This title should not be confused with a separate 58-episode ShortMax series of the same name. DramaWave has gone the furthest, with more than 80 percent of its newly released content AI-generated, according to 36Kr, which also reported that the app’s annualized revenue exceeded $700 million by the second quarter of 2026. AI video dramas have spread beyond the apps too, as Fruit Love Island, an AI-made parody of Love Island featuring fruit contestants, showed on TikTok in March 2026 before critics widely labeled it “AI slop”.
Stage Seven: A Hollywood Studio Steps Onto the Line
Fox Entertainment is the plainest example of traditional studios paying attention. Fox turned into a shareholder in Holywater, the Kyiv-founded company behind the My Drama app, by taking an equity stake in October 2025. Fox also made a commitment to produce more than 200 vertical titles over two years. Fox-produced series already on the app include Billionaire Blackmail, Bound by Obsession and My Heart’s Offside. Holywater raised a further $22 million in January 2026 in a round led by Horizon Capital, and My Drama took the 2025 Webby Award for Best Streaming Service. Watching a network-scale producer commit to that volume suggests the eight-day shoot has shifted from curiosity to line item.
A Quick Look at the Production Line

Lay out the stages side by side, and the business logic becomes clear. Much of the rest is arranged around the shoot, the fixed, expensive block. Scripts tend to come in pre-tested as novels or familiar tropes, known faces carry the casting, and cliffhangers that feed a paywall drive the edit. TheWrap and Wikipedia describe broadly similar methods across the category, even though fans who search for a “reel short drama” usually have ReelShort titles in mind. The table below relies only on publicly reported figures to sum up typical time and cost at each stage. If no reliable number has been published, the table says so instead of guessing.
| Stage of production | Typical time / cost | What takes place |
|---|---|---|
| Source material and scripting | No published figure | A novel, web fiction or proven trope is turned into a script; Breaking the Ice is based on Shutout, Bound by Honor on Cora Reilly’s novel |
| Casting | No public figure | Leads are cast, often actors who already have short-drama credits; animated titles bypass this step |
| Shoot | 7–10 days; $150K–250K (Wikipedia) or $150K–300K per series (TheWrap); $100K–150K per 70 episodes (Jiuzhou) | 50 to 70+ episodes are filmed for a vertical frame |
| Edit | Episodes lasting 60–100 seconds | Footage is cut into installments that each end on a cliffhanger |
| Release and paywall placement | The first 8–10 episodes free (TheWrap); about 60 coins for each later episode on ReelShort | Episodes are unlocked with coins, ads or a weekly pass of about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 |
| AI and animated series | Costs not disclosed | Motion comics including The Lost Heir and Shattered Vows; over 80 percent of DramaWave’s new releases made with AI |
| Co-production with a studio | 200+ titles over two years (Fox for My Drama) | An established studio makes vertical series for an app |
